Continue readingThluangchin, a six-year-old with autism spectrum disorder, aimed to build social skills, expand her vocabulary, and enjoy everyday activities with her peers.
Surrounded by her supportive family and the Everyday Independence team, Thluangchin has progressed towards achieving her goals since starting with Everyday Independence in November 2021. Recently, she’s been supported by Key Worker Stephanie, Occupational Therapist Amelia, Speech Pathologist Jennifer, and Habit Coach Hamish.
Thluangchin’s family identified that she wasn’t getting the support she needed to grow and develop at the private school she was enrolled in. So her therapy team developed a plan to support her to achieve her goals. Each therapist played a key role in supporting Thluangchin in enhancing her social skills and growing her confidence.
Key Worker Stephanie, worked closely with Thluangchin’s family to identify a school that matched her needs. She also supported her with emotional regulation and built her capacity so that she was ready to transition into the new school.
Amelia, her Occupational Therapist, introduced visual cues to support Thluangchin in the classroom. She also provided a weighted lap pad and a wobble cushion for when Thluangchin felt overwhelmed and needed sensory support.
Speech Pathologist Jennifer supported her with written tasks, designed to enhance her vocabulary and reading skills. Playing to Thluangchin’s interests, they practised social interactions through imaginary play.
Habit Coach Hamish, joined her and her family on everyday outings to parks and playgrounds, providing education on being safe in the community and taking turns in modelling behaviours with Thluangchin.
Thluangchin has grown so much and is now happily attending a mainstream school. She’s more confidently chatting with her peers, participating in classroom activities, and is receiving great support from her school staff.
“Our therapy team worked to Thluangchin’s strengths. Each of us brings different perspectives and strategies to the mix. Thluangchin’s supportive family has been critical to her success. She’s more included in her school community and is working towards reaching her full potential. It’s been a pleasure to witness her grow,” said Key Worker Stephanie.
