Continue readingLeyla is a happy five-year-old who loves playing outdoors, having tea parties, and playing with playdoh and other sensory toys.
Leyla’s parents engaged Everyday Independence for early childhood supports (early childhood intervention services) to build her communication and language skills, be more independent, and work on her social play skills so she could make new friends at kinder.
Before coming to Everyday Independence, Leyla’s language, independence, self-care and social skills were limited. Leyla just wanted to be a ‘big girl’ and do things more for herself, and let others know what she wanted.
With support from a key worker and therapy team, Leyla has built a wide range of skills. Leyla’s team provides therapy and services in different environments including her home and kinder, enabling them to uncover any barriers holding Leyla back.
Key Worker Sonia, the family’s main contact for her services, attends Leyla’s kinder to help work on her social skills. This includes practicing turn taking and sharing when playing with her friends. Sonia also works closely with Leyla’s educators to build their capacity to modify activities so she can participate more.
Speech Pathologist Janice is helping Leyla build her communication skills by showing mum how to use meaningful play and their daily routine at home. Habit Coach Deanna also provides bursts of therapy to help Leyla build her communication skills quickly, using play, modelling and other simple techniques.
Fast forward, everyone is thrilled by Leyla’s progress. Her communication has increased as her vocabulary has developed. Leyla can now use short sentence structures when speaking. She is taking turns during play with peers, shares, and enjoys engaging and completing tabletop activities at kinder.
When asked about her time with Leyla, Sonia said;
Next, Leyla and her team will work on the skills she needs to transition successfully to school.
