Life Stages Supported by Developmental Educators

Supporting Teenagers Aged 13 - 18 Years to Develop Independence

Driving Positive Developmental Change

Living with a disability through adolescence can be stressful and frustrating for both parents and teenagers. Everyday Independence developmental educators support teenagers aged between 13 – 18 years to develop the life skills and confidence to better manage their everyday life and alleviate the pressure on their families.

They’ll deliver support in daily tasks such as using public transport, cooking, personal care, budgeting, time management, self-advocacy, communicating needs and preferences, social interactions, and planning for their future.

At Everyday Independence, developmental educators serve as your primary therapist, leading and coordinating your therapy journey. They organise services from other allied health practitioners and link you to other supports like education, mental health, welfare, and employment services.

How a Developmental Educator Supports You

Developmental educators will:

  • Assess current abilities and areas for growth, including identifying environmental barriers
  • Collaborate with support networks to create a personalised plan that focuses on building independence and inclusion
  • Provide coaching and strategies to develop everyday life skills and independent confidence
  • Support designed to enhance social skills, particularly in maintaining friendships and coping with peer pressures
  • Help develop self-advocacy skills to empower teenagers to communicate their needs and make informed decisions about their future
