Matthew’s Journey to Independence
19-year-old Matthew is supported in building his everyday skills with the help of an OT and a habit coach.
Continue readingEddie lives with his wife, Emily and teenage children, Noah and Sophia. He’s spent much of his life working in marketing and human resources, and at the age of 41 he suffered a stroke that severely impacted his communication, leaving him unable to return to work.
This, however, didn’t deter Eddie from wanting to make the most of everyday life. His Everyday Independence therapy team supported him, which included practitioners from different disciplines, such as speech pathology and physiotherapy, all working collaboratively to support him in achieving his goals. Together with Eddie, they identified potential career paths to build his confidence and capacity to return to the workforce.
Eddie was motivated to help people who had experienced similar difficulties, so he enrolled in Certificate IV in Allied Health. He did his final work placement at Everyday Independence in 2020 alongside Physiotherapist Brianna.
With limited work left to do, Eddie suddenly became unwell and was admitted to the hospital. He had consequently suffered another stroke. He became very deconditioned and lost around 10kg of weight. Again, he endured significant communication and cognitive difficulties.
During 2021, Eddie displayed extreme commitment, resilience, and hard work and had amazing support from his therapy team. His main goal was to regain his fitness and return to study, which he did in June 2021; he completed another work placement at Everyday Independence.
Eddie’s therapy team were filled with pride when he sent them an email letting them know that he’d passed his course. His motivation and drive never faltered despite facing countless obstacles, leading him to achieve incredible outcomes. This year, Eddie is looking for work as an Allied Health Assistant.
An interdisciplinary therapy team and person-centred approach led by speech pathologist Kate. Kate helped to identify Eddie’s strengths and interests and ultimately helped shape a life plan and prospective career path.
Whilst it was a long, turbulent journey, Eddie’s therapy team have been reeling with inspiration from his progression and achievements. He has regained his communication skills, financial stability and capacity to participate in what he enjoys while supporting others experiencing similar challenges. Go, Eddie – we’re your biggest champions!
