Getting Therapy Results, the Fun Way

Making Therapy Fun and Engaging

Everyday Independence therapists always look for creative ideas to make therapy fun and engaging, especially with children and teenagers. For 13-year-old twins with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) the solution came in three brightly coloured timers!

The twins felt frustrated in the morning as they found it difficult to get ready for school on time. This meant they were late for school and the whole family often felt stressed.

When working with them to create a morning routine, their Occupational Therapist came up with a solution they hadn’t used before – timers to help the girls keep track of the time when undertaking certain tasks.  Each timer included a different time limit based on the girls’ amount of time for showering, brushing their teeth, and washing their faces.

The girls have embraced using the timers which helped them to manage their time and stay on schedule while getting ready for school.  With this small change, the family’s morning routine is less stressful and the girls are building valuable everyday skills.
