Full Speed Ahead: Sebby Builds His Everyday Skills

Four-year-old Sebby is an energetic child who loves playing with his toy cars and trains, especially at daycare. Sebby’s parents chose Everyday Independence to support his development with early childhood supports (early childhood intervention services). They wanted him to build skills across all aspects of his life – at home, pre-school and in the community, and prepare to transition to preschool.

Sebby is neurodivergent, with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Global Developmental Delay, and speech delay. This means Sebby finds some daily activities more challenging than other children his age, such as managing his toileting routine, communicating his needs and feelings, and moving on from activities he enjoys doing.

At times, these challenges led to frustration and stress for Sebby, which was difficult for both him and his parents.

Understanding Sebby’s Needs

Key Worker Keren worked closely with Sebby and his parents using her deep knowledge of child development and learning to understand Sebby’s strengths, interests, routine, and the family’s support needs. She developed a therapy plan with speech pathology, occupational therapy, and physiotherapy provided at home and daycare, ensuring Sebby would achieve the best possible outcomes with his NDIS funding.

Keren introduced key word sign to help Sebby communicate more easily with his parents and educators, alongside visuals for toileting to make the process more predictable and less overwhelming. She also used activities to support Sebby’s gross motor skills.

To help Sebby build skills at daycare, Keren provided professional development to his educators so they could use the same strategies at daycare.  This approach supported Sebby’s growth and learning while helped him participate more in activities with his peers.

Keren supported Sebby’s parents by exploring preschool options, coaching them on home strategies to build Sebby’s communication, and assisting with a Change of Circumstances and connecting them to a Plan Manager for optimal NDIS services.

A Team Approach for Positive Change

As part of our team approach to providing therapy, Keren plans and oversees his therapy services, coordinating supports from other therapists.  Sebby’s team also includes:

  • a speech pathologist who provides strategies to support Sebby’s speech and language development
  • an occupational therapist who completed a sensory profile to better understand and support Sebby’s sensory needs, and
  • a physiotherapist to recommend activities to help Sebby build his confidence with physical activities like climbing playground equipment.

Keren is excited to continue to support Sebby as he works towards his goals, celebrating each step of his journey.

As a key worker, I am excited to continue to see Sebby through all of his key transitions throughout his early childhood
